Cost of Substance Abuse to Society.

A study conducted by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction estimated that the overall cost of substance abuse to Canadians (in 2020) totaled $49.1 billion dollars. In Alberta, this cost was $7.2 billion— which amounts to approximately $1,638 per person in Alberta (regardless of age).

Substance abuse and addiction have significant consequences for society as a whole, with the potential to impact crime rates, child abuse and neglect, hospitalization, homelessness, incarceration, and more.

In 2020, crimes linked to drug use or drug-related laws cost the Canadian justice system $10 billion. This made up about 20.3% of the total cost of $49.1 billion. This came out to around $262 for each person in Canada. In short, this cost to society is significant!
