Annual Report for 2018

March 8, 2019

2018 was a banner year for Simon House Recovery Centre / Residence Society! We were inspected by Accreditation Canada in March of 2018, and passed their review with flying colors with an Accreditation review score of 93.3%. This was a major accomplishment for Simon House as we found out in 2018 that the Alberta Government would pass legislation giving them the authority to inspect and license addiction and mental health centres in Alberta starting in 2019. Being Accredited by Accreditation Canada, puts us in the immediate position to be licensed by the Provincial Government of Alberta. Becoming Accredited with Accreditation Canada, also positioned Simon House to be eligible to receive funding from Alberta Health Services.

In 2018, for the first time in its history, Simon House secured a funding agreement for the provision of addiction and mental health services, with Alberta Health Services. In 2018, Simon House received $113,625.00 from this funding agreement with Alberta Health Services. Throughout 2018, I continued discussions with Alberta Health Services in regards to “operationalizing” this funding agreement into an ongoing annual funding amount. I also continued discussions with Alberta Health Services regarding additional opportunities for funding for Simon House, specific to our Medication Assisted Treatment program for clients taking Methadone, Suboxone, and Naltrexone.

Another first for Simon House took place in 2018! I recruited and hired a Director of Clinical Services, to design, implement, and oversee the treatment program at Simon House. This new position was filled by a licenced and registered individual, group, and family therapist with a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and over 10 years of experience working in the field of addiction and mental treatment and recovery. Our new Director of Clinic Services started in October of 2018. We also added a new part-time position of an Administrative Assistant in November 2018.

Financially, we finished 2018 $5,000.00 in the black! This was mainly due to increasing our revenue by $189,022.00 through increasing and collecting “Program Fees” for attending our 12 week program. (Please refer to our 2018 Audited Financial Statement, as prepared by our independent third party Auditors, for additional information) We also continued to receive great financial support from individual, corporate, club, and foundation donations to Simon House. Such as the Rotary Club of Calgary, and the Calgary Foundation. Finally, we held another successful “Friends of Simon House” fund raising dinner in June of 2018. In regards to our physical facilities, 2018 was a very active year for Simon House. Due to extreme weather conditions, we were forced to make multiple insurance claims to repair multiple buildings in our portfolio. These repairs included replacing the entire hot water system in our main building.

In regards to program performance in 2018, we admitted 214 men to our program. This number is down from our annual average of approximately 250 admission per year due to losing 8 beds for almost 6 months due to ice damning which caused water to leak through a roof and cause great damage in one half of one of duplexes. (Yes, this was one of our major insurance claims of 2018)

Of the 214 men admitted to our 12 week program, 119 men successfully completed and graduated. This is a 12 week program completion rate of 56% for 2018. We also celebrated 42 to Alumni who achieved one year of continuous sobriety in 2018.

2018 should be considered one of the most, if not the most meaningful and successful years in Simon House’s lengthy history. I state this due to becoming accredited, which legitimises and validates the work that Simon House does every day to guide and empower men to achieve long-term recovery from addiction and all of its effects. Becoming accredited with Accreditation Canada should not be understated due to how it positions Simon House for opportunities for funding, and pending provincial licensing requirements coming in 2019.

I excitedly and energetically look forward to 2019 to be another very significant and successful year for Simon House. There are many important growth and improvement opportunities on the horizon for Simon House in 2019, where we will continue to lead the way in addiction treatment and lifelong recovery.

Thank you for your support in 2018, I look forward to working with you in 2019!
